TOWARD A DEFINITION OF RADIO ART

1. Radio art is the use of radio as a medium for art

2. Radio happens in the place it is heard and not in the production studio.

3. Sound quality is secondary to conceptual originality.

4. Radio is almost always heard combined with other sounds - domestic, traffic, tv, phone calls, playing children etc.

5. Radio art is not sound art - nor is it music. Radio art is radio.

6. Sound art and music are not radio art just because they are broadcast on the radio.

7. Radio space is all the places where radio is heard.

8. Radio art is composed of sound objects experienced in radio space.

9. The radio of every listener determines the sound quality of a radio work.

10. Each listener hears their own final version of a work for radio combined with the ambient sound of their own space.

11. The radio artist knows that there is no way to control the experience of a radio work.

12. Radio art is not a combination of radio and art. Radio art is radio by artists.

Waiheke Radio gets closer...

Well it's been about 6 months since the Hauraki Hoedown was last on air but thats not to suggest that Country Mike has been just sitting around commiserating the demise of the Beach ... oh no. We decided that we'd just build our own damn station.... enter Waiheke Radio. In the six months since we hatched this idea we've managed to form a Trust with some truly dedicated and intelligent folks on it, yours truly has become a special advisor to the Trust. We've got our first transmitter pole up as well as secured a grant from the local Community Board to pay for the second transmitter. We've gained a community lease on the old premises vacated by Beach FM and given that a once over, we've put in a grant application to the lottery board, and have had 2 public meetings. I've also got the new site running so head on over to http://www.waihekeradio.org.nz for more updates and pics of how its all going. At this pace the Hoedown should be back on air within a couple of months I reckon.

Yeeee Haaaawwww (and all that) ... finally out its the Son of Country Mike Podcast #1 ... for your listening pleasure. Its short it's swe... well, not really sweet, but ... well just download it and give it a go! You can get it here: Son of Country Mike Podcast #1 at least until they remove it for copyright violations or some such arcane legal skullduggery. The gist of Son of Country Mike podcasts are 3 songs, a couple of comments, all resulting in one podcast - not too much effort. #1 features a grand composition about anal sex and Evangelical preachers brought to you by the Portaland, Oregan band "I Can Lick Any Son of a Bitch in the House" followed closely by an Alex Chilton ditty about the Far East, and all wrapped up with a longish sea shanty(?) by the Akron/Family ... whats not to like about that?

Damn! It's been so long it's almost hardly worth starting again ... but I will nonetheless. Every week I do this show and I write down what I play thinking I'm going to blog it the next day and now i've got little playlists in about all of my jeans pockets, all over my desk at work and at home most of which will never make it now. But it's a new year so I'll give it another shot. Here is the playlist for Monday January 22nd, 2007. After chucking in my two "9" songs following Bob's weekly 'bobcast' I did an small run of war songs and got on just a little bit of a soapbox about what's happening in Lebanon. There's a lot that could go in here obviously, but I was afraid it might get a bit much so just did a handfull or so. War songs in the country vein seem to line up along a sort of trad / alt line with the traditional musicians often presenting a kind of pro-war / american nationalism / "support our boys over there" type of sentiment vs the alt-country conscious anti-war message, best reflected in this small set by Steve Earle and the one by Wilco. Might have another crack at this later in the month. Here's the playlist ...

Chulahoma is a brand new 6 song ep from the Akron, OH two-piece The Black Keys on the Fat Possum label. All songs were written by the late Junior Kimbrough the first artist to record for Fat Possum. Kimbrough was friend of the late R.L. Burnside - another Fat Possum label mate who sadly passed away earlier this year. The Keys stripped down drum and guitar sound pays excellent homage to this North Mississippi Hill Country sound that seems to finally be finding it's place.
